The Kayashima Brewery was founded in 1873 on the Kunisaki Peninsula in Oita Prefecture on Japan's southernmost island, Kyushu, and is run by the fifth-generation owner Mr. Susumu Kayashima, who places great emphasis on craftsmanship and regionality.

The brewery markets its sake under the brand Nishi no Seki, the Champion of the West or in another reading of the Japanese character, Gate of the West.

We like the reading Champion of the West best as it goes well with the sake of the brewer, which reflects the regionality of Western Japan with its warm climate, with elegant rice notes.

The sake of the brewery are also winners of numerous medals, including the renowned French Kura Master Sake competition. The brewery matures its sake in tanks and bottles.
